Capsule wardrobe: 12 pieces that last a whole year

A capsule wardrobe is a small wardrobe of around twelve pieces in two to three base colours that can all be combined with each other. Because every top goes with every bottom, twelve pieces make more wearable outfits than thirty that don’t. At Good-Natured we design our clothing for exactly this kind of everyday life: calm colours, durable fabrics and messages you won’t tire of after one season.

You notice the practical effect every morning. The environmental one comes along by itself.

At a glance

• Size: around 12 pieces – 5 tops, 3 bottoms, 2 layers, 2 accents. Shoes, underwear and sportswear don’t count.

• Colours: 2–3 base colours plus no more than 2 accent colours.

• The maths: 5 tops × 3 bottoms = 15 basic outfits, many more with layers.

• Starting point: what’s already in your wardrobe – not a big shopping trip.

“A capsule wardrobe isn’t an exercise in going without. It’s the realisation that half the wardrobe never goes together.”

Which colours work for a capsule wardrobe?

Two to three base colours that combine with each other, plus no more than two accent colours. Black, beige and navy are a classic choice – but any combination works as long as you stick to it.

Anything outside this frame isn’t a bad garment. It’s just one you’ll wear less often because it’s harder to combine.

The twelve pieces

Tops (5): two T-shirts in base colours, a longsleeve, a sweater, a hoodie. Calm basics like the Easy Yoke T-Shirt Black or the Easy Yoke T-Shirt White made from 100% organic cotton work well for the shirts, each 38 €. For the longsleeve, the Creation Longsleeve with its washed look fits nicely, for 35 €.

Bottoms (3): a dark pair of trousers, a light pair or a second one in a different cut, and a comfortable pair for home.

Layers (2): a light jacket and a warm one.

Accents (2): one piece with a design and one accessory – cap, beanie, bag, scarf. The Fisherman Beanie made from 100% organic cotton for 25 € or the Alpha & Omega Beach Bag for 29 € add an accent without competing with the rest.

Shoes and underwear don’t count. Nor does sportswear or anything for special occasions – that’s a small category of its own.

Calm basics in base colours carry the accent pieces, not the other way round – such as the Easy Yoke T-Shirt Black with a sewn-on fabric appliqué, made in Portugal.

How many outfits do twelve pieces make?

More than you’d think. Five tops and three bottoms already give you 15 basic combinations. Add the two layers – no jacket, the light one or the warm one – and you’re at 45. The accents change the look on top of that, without needing another piece.

But the maths only works if everything really goes together. A single top in a colour that only matches one pair of trousers gives you one combination instead of three.

What mistake does almost everyone make with a capsule wardrobe?

Clearing out too quickly. A capsule wardrobe doesn’t come from throwing out twenty pieces and buying twelve new ones – environmentally, that’s the opposite of the point.

The sensible way: sort through your wardrobe, identify the twelve pieces you already wear most, and simply put the rest in a box for now. After three months you’ll see what you actually missed – usually surprisingly little.

What quality means here

When a shirt is no longer one of twenty but one of five, it gets worn and washed much more often. That’s exactly why dense fabrics and clean workmanship pay off in a small wardrobe – light pieces won’t stand up to that frequency for long. How long a good shirt lasts and where it fails first is covered in the guide How long does a T-shirt really last?.

For the warmer layers, knitwear is worth a look: the Alpha & Omega Knitwear Sweater Men for 68 € and the Alpha & Omega Knitwear Sweater Women for 63 € carry their design as embroidery and, like many of our pieces, are made in Portugal. At Good-Natured we place great value on producing in Europe, and all our suppliers are members of the Fair Wear Foundation.

Concrete basics for different people are covered in the guides Christian menswear: 5 basics and Christian womenswear: 4 styles. And which cut suits you is explained in Oversized, boxy or relaxed.

Your own capsule wardrobe in four steps

1. Take stock. Take everything out of the wardrobe and pick out the pieces you’ve actually worn in recent months.

2. Set your colours. These favourites almost always reveal your two to three base colours by themselves.

3. Name the gaps. Only now does it become clear what’s really missing – often just one or two pieces, such as a good hoodie or a second shirt in a base colour.

4. Add deliberately. New pieces have to pass the three-combination test.

The three-combination test

Before a new piece moves in: can you name three combinations with things you already own, straight away? If not, it will be a piece that just hangs there – no matter how much you liked it in the shop.

Conclusion

Twelve pieces, two to three base colours, consistently combinable. If you start with what you already have instead of buying new, you can have a wardrobe within an afternoon that asks for fewer decisions in the morning – and much less restocking over the year. And if a piece is missing after all, you’ll find basics and favourites at Good-Natured made for exactly that: to be worn often.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need two capsule wardrobes for summer and winter?

Many people work with two capsules that largely overlap. When the season changes, only three to five pieces are swapped – a light jacket for a warm one, a shirt for knitwear. The base colours stay the same so that everything still goes together.

Can a piece with a big design be part of it?

Yes – that’s exactly what the accents are for. A shirt or hoodie with a message has even more impact in a calm wardrobe, because it isn’t competing with five other designs. It just matters that its base colour goes with your bottoms.

What do I do with the pieces that don’t fit the capsule?

Keep them for now instead of throwing them away. Whatever you haven’t missed after three months can be passed on, sold or donated. That way every piece stays in use, even if it no longer hangs in your wardrobe.
