School merch has one advantage over almost any other group project: the target audience gets to decide for itself. And one drawback: it is ruthless. A graduation shirt that misses the mark will be worn once for the photo and never again.
“A class shirt is either worn for three years or worn once. There’s almost nothing in between.”
The two decisions that matter
1. The product. A lightweight unisex T-shirt is inexpensive and rarely worn. A heavyweight hoodie or an oversized T-shirt costs more and becomes part of everyday wear. For merch that’s meant to last, this is a more important decision than the design.
2. The time reference. The graduating class is a good choice – a full date turns the item into a keepsake. “Class of ’27” works; “Prom 27 June 2027” does not.
What works well
The class motto in small print. On the sleeve or at the nape of the neck rather than across the chest. Then it’s a detail, not a statement.
Names on the back. The classic graduation-shirt option – a lot of work to manage the data, and the reason people hold on to the item.
An inside joke. Something only the class understands. The strongest design of all.
Several products instead of just one. A T-shirt for everyone, a hoodie for those who want to spend more, a tote bag as a low-cost option – this noticeably boosts participation.
Certified organic cotton or recycled polyester instead of promotional giveaways – send your inquiry to b2b@good-natured.com.
MAKE AN INQUIRY ↗How many pieces and how much lead time does school merch need?
T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, tote bags, and caps are available from 25 pieces; ask us about pricing for socks at b2b@good-natured.com. Allow six to eight weeks; if you also need the design developed, plan for an additional two to three weeks.
For graduating classes, this means deciding in March if you want the shirts for the June prom – and finalizing the list of names by then.
How do you finance graduation merch?
Preorders with a deposit. The safest option: everyone pays in advance, so the committee doesn’t have to pay out of pocket.
Add a markup of two to three euros. This covers spare items and late orders – or helps fund the graduation budget.
Sponsorship. Common for school merch. If logos are going on the item, keep them small and put them on the sleeve; otherwise, the wear rate drops significantly.
If you want a Bible verse or guiding motto on the item, the same rules apply as for confirmation shirts: keep it short and small, and when in doubt, use only the reference. Students rarely wear a full verse across the chest outside school – and that’s exactly where the item should work, too.
The data question
Names and logos need to be prepared: put names in a spreadsheet with the correct spelling, and provide logos as vector files. A screenshot from the school PDF isn’t suitable for printing – this is the most common cause of delays just before the event.
Conclusion
School merch comes down to two decisions: choose a good product over a cheap one, and the class year over a date. Everything else – design, names, sponsors – follows from that and is easier than it looks.
The process in seven steps, quantities, decoration, costs – and the five most common mistakes.
